Job Title: Student Enabler - Independent Living

Payment: £13.25 Per hour

Hours: 12 - 35 hours a week

Job Summary

Enabling a young lady who is studying her BA Business and Management at the

UHI and has moved into the Inverness Student Halls.  Due to her Cerebral Palsy,

effecting her arms and legs she needs an enabler to bridge the gaps between

what she needs and is unable to do physically herself.  She drives a power chair

using head switches. She would like you to enable her with note taking and

scribing during term times, going out and about, cooking, cleaning, sometimes

operating her chair, eating, drinking, personal care, exercising, organising her

room, going to festivals, pubs, events and generally facilitating her student life by

being her “hands”. The job would be supporting her at the halls with her online

studies during term time and whatever activities she would like to do when Uni

stops. This job would suit someone interested in disabilities, equality and

achievement.  Someone who is keen to gain and or apply their experience to

make a positive contribution to the development of themselves and others.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Develop a relationship of trust, demonstrating reliability and competence

  • Take an active role in listening and taking instructions, becoming familiar with likes and needs, making working together smooth, simple and fun

  • Promote choice by communicating to empower, acceptance that all the decisions around activities are not yours

  • Apply a person-centred approach which means seeing the world from her perspective, not how you imagine or assume

Equipment

  • Learning how to use the various pieces of equipment: power chairs, plinth, hoist, slings, bed, shower chair, bike, mac book, ipad, monitor
