Navigating University And Accessible Education

“I’ve been at the university since 2020 and I’ve achieved my Social Sciences with 2 modules. I have done a couple modules on childcare but I’ve now found my passion for Business Management as it really aligns with the fact that I have my own team. One aspect of navigating university that I love is that the campus is really accessible. They have made some adjustments which have been outstanding in terms of the toilet and the nook that I can study.

“I have completed my third year of uni and I’m excited to start my fourth and final year here at the UHI.”

The University of the Highlands and Islands is an example of how far we’ve come in building a more inclusive society. The modern campus is designed with accessibility in mind, featuring well-maintained lifts and a library with quiet, wheelchair-accessible study nooks where students can focus in comfort. The main campus also includes accessible toilets equipped with a hoist system—ensuring that all students have what they need to move around and take part fully.

Although there are still some areas to be improved, Poppy has been able to stay full time at the student accommodation with the help of the UHI team listening and making changes. Poppy has her own hoist, adjustable bed system and adjustable kitchen, along with access to a wet-room and studio room for her enablers. With this setup, she’s able to live more independently and focus on both her academic work and social life—just like any other student.
